World Crisis Theatre
World Crisis Theatre proposes a meeting of professional artists and young people coming from different countries in Europe. Their common goal is the creation of two plays dealing with the 2008 financial crisis and the present one, together with organising public activities.
The project is inspired the The Power of Yes, a play by British playwright David Hare. The Power of Yes was an investigative theatrical documentary at the heart of the financial crisis as it was lived in Great Britain. The global 2008 crisis has become a sort of turning one and by turn the European citizens are either victims or judges of their neighbours’ crisis. It is one of the project’s strength to enable the confrontation of the points of view coming from the different participating countries, a crossed vision between the peoples.
The project takes place on 2 levels, from September 2012 to July 2014:
1. Groups of young non-professionals from the participating countries investigate, as David Hare did, on the current implications of the financial crisis [period: Oct. 12 / June 13]. These investigations lead to the writing of theatrical works during a European theatrical workshop associating delegates from every group (Sifnos, Greece, July 13). This form has been then rehearsed and performed by the local youth groups in each country under the guidance of professionals.
2. A theatre company of 10 young professional actors from each involved country is formed to rehearse and perform The European crisis games (freely inspired by The Power of Yes). The play is performed in English, on tour in the participating countries (period April-May 14). At these performances are added the theatrical form played by the non-professionals from the first step, putting the whole project in perspective.
